The Magnet Nursing
Services Recognition
Program® is a voluntary
international
recognition program that
recognizes excellence in
nursing care. The
leading nursing
credentialing
organization in the
U.S., the American
Nurses Credentialing
Center (ANCC) is
passionate about helping
you as an individual
nurse or as a team of
nurses in a healthcare
setting on your journey
to nursing excellence.
With ANCC, you will
enrich your professional
and personal
development, increase
your exposure to issues
within the nursing
community, and
contribute to your
profession's advancement
and commitment to
quality patient care.
In 2005,
Spartanburg Regional
Medical Center, in
Spartanburg, South
Carolina, became the
first facility in the
state to earn the
designation. While other
hospitals in the state
are currently in the
process of obtaining
Magnet status,
Spartanburg was the
first to receive the
trophy, which will soon
start making the rounds
to nursing units in the
4,500-employee facility.
Spartanburg’s Vice
President of Nursing
Catherine Whelchel, RN,
CHE, who received the
award in Miami this
week, said that her
facility’s designation
has piqued the interest
of doctors, nurses and
nursing students, and
even acknowledged that
the town’s mayor
attended the ANCC’s
committee meeting to
assess the hospital’s
standing in the area.
The pride felt
throughout the
community, and
especially among the
nursing staff, is a
common feeling among
Magnet awardees.
The Magnet
Recognition Program®
was developed by the
American Nurses
Credentialing Center to
recognize health care
organizations that
provide the very best in
nursing care and uphold
the tradition within
nursing of professional
nursing practice. The
program also provides a
vehicle for
disseminating successful
practices and strategies
among nursing systems.
The coveted program is
based on quality
indicators and standards
of nursing practice.
Recognizing quality
patient care and nursing
excellence, the Magnet
Recognition Program®
provides consumers with
the ultimate benchmark
to measure the quality
of care that they can
expect to receive. As a
natural outcome of this,
the program elevates the
reputation and standards
of the nursing
profession.
Magnet Designation is
an important Recognition
